Cordless Paint Sprayer: How to Choose and Use One

Contractor using a cordless airless paint sprayer to coat a wall at a renovation jobsite

A cordless paint sprayer is worth it when the coating, the area, and the power situation all fit a battery unit. It is a poor fit when the job is large, the material is too heavy, or you would spend the day swapping batteries. Match the sprayer to the work first, then confirm the current listing before you buy.

Decide in four checks:

  1. Coating. The label must allow spraying, and the sprayer manual must list that material.
  2. Size. Handheld battery units are built for small jobs, often about 1 to 3 gallons, not whole-house production.
  3. Power. Compare gallons per charge and whether a spare battery is included. Voltage alone does not predict run time.
  4. Cleanup. If you will not flush the gun the same day, a smaller tool is usually the better choice.

Start with Integrity Supply's spraying equipment collection, then narrow to a handheld or a cart-style cordless unit.

When a cordless paint sprayer is the right tool

Battery power solves a location problem. It does not automatically spray faster, finer, or longer than a corded airless. Use it when an outlet is missing, a cord would cross wet coating or a stair, or the work is a short list of doors, cabinets, soffits, or touch-ups.

Graco's airless guide describes its handheld airless sprayers as tools for small jobs and touch-up, about 1 to 3 gallons, with faster setup than pulling out a full-size rig. That is the practical ceiling for a cup-style gun. A cart-style cordless, such as a Graco 390 PC class unit, is a different tool: more pressure, a longer hose, and more coating per charge, at a much higher price and weight.

Skip battery power when any of these are true:

  • The area is large and uninterrupted, and a corded or gas airless is already the production tool on that site.
  • The coating label does not allow spray application, or the manual does not list it.
  • You need a tip larger than the model allows. Several handheld listings cap compatible RAC X tips around 0.016 inch, while a 390 PC class listing goes to about 0.021 inch.
  • The crew cannot commit to same-day flushing. Dried coating in a small pump costs more time than the cord you avoided.

If you are still deciding between spray technology and a roller, read what an airless paint sprayer does before you compare battery models. That page covers the pump. This one covers whether the pump should run on a battery.

How to choose a cordless paint sprayer

Write the coating name, the surface, the approximate gallons, and where you will spray. Then compare three build types. Prices below are Integrity Supply listing prices observed in October 2026. Confirm the live product page, because packages and prices change.

Build. Best fit. What to verify. Example on Integrity Supply.
Light handheld. Stain, doors, and small DIY coats. Max tip near 0.015 inch and a 32 oz liner. TrueCoat 360 Cordless Connect, listed at $209.79.
Pro handheld airless. Trim, cabinets, and touch-up of about a gallon per charge. Pressure range, tip size, and whether batteries are included. UltraMax handheld, about $1,138. Ultra QuickShot 20B473, about $1,566.
Cart or stand cordless. Rooms and remote areas that still need airless output. Gallons per charge, hose length, and tip size up to about 0.021 inch. 390 PC Cordless class, listed around $2,397.

Coating and tip come before the battery

A sprayer that works with latex may still be wrong for lacquer, block filler, or elastomer. Read the coating label for spray permission, thinning rules, and recoat time. Then read the sprayer manual for approved materials. If the two conflict, do not guess. Ask the coating maker or call Integrity Supply at 866-918-0300 and have both model numbers ready.

Tip size controls how much material leaves the gun. Use only a tip the manual lists. A light handheld with a 0.015 inch maximum is not a substitute for a unit rated to 0.021 inch. For a model-level look at one pro handheld, see the Ultra QuickShot airless sprayer review. Use this guide to decide the class, then that review if the QuickShot is the class you need.

Read gallons per charge, not volts

Listing claims differ sharply. The UltraMax and Ultra QuickShot pages say about 1 gallon per DeWalt 20V charge. The 390 PC Cordless page says up to about 3 gallons per FLEXVOLT charge, with two batteries in that package. Real output still moves with tip size, pressure, material, temperature, and how often you stop. A spare compatible battery matters more than a bigger voltage number from a different brand system.

Also check what the carton includes: battery, charger, tip, filter, liner, and hose. A low shelf price with no battery is not the same purchase as a kit.

Jobsite setup before the first pass

Most bad cordless results start before the trigger. Plan the charge, the mask, and a test pass in that order.

Power and placement

Charge batteries before you open the coating. Seat the pack fully, and keep a second pack charging if the listing says the gun sprays about a gallon per charge and the job is larger than that. Put the charger on a dry surface off the floor, away from overspray. On a cart unit, route the hose so it cannot cross a wet wall or a walkway.

Hold the loaded gun in the position you will actually spray. A 6 lb handheld is easy at waist height and tiring overhead. A 30 lb cart sprayer stays on the floor, which is the point of that build.

Mask only what the spray can hit

Overspray travels past the fan, especially outdoors or near a fan or open window. Cover floors, hardware, and adjacent finishes. Choosing painters tape by surface and masking paper setup are separate steps. Do them before you fill the cup. A cordless gun is fast enough to stripe an unmasked hinge in one pass.

Test on scrap, then lock the setting

Spray cardboard at the distance the manual states. You want a full fan with no heavy edges and no spit at the start of the pass. Adjust pressure only inside the model's range. Several pro handhelds list about 500 to 2,000 PSI. More pressure than the tip and coating need increases overspray without hiding a bad tip.

Strain and thin only if the coating label allows it. Do not add water or solvent to help a battery gun keep up.

Mistakes that make a cordless sprayer feel weak

Three setup errors show up more often than a bad motor. First is a soft battery that was stored empty. Charge it the day before, and do not start a finish coat on the last bar. Second is the wrong tip for the coating. A fine-finish tip on heavy latex spits. A large tip on a light handheld trips the pressure limit and drains the pack. Third is spraying over dust because masking felt optional on a small job. A cordless gun still throws a fan, and a short job still needs a clean edge.

If the fan pulses, stop and check the simple causes before you blame the battery. The cup or liner must be sealed, the intake must be covered with material, and the filter must be clear. Graco's handheld notes for a gun that will not pick up paint start with a locked cup and air pushed out of the liner. Those checks take a minute. A mid-job teardown takes the afternoon.

How to spray and clean a cordless unit

Start the pass moving, then pull the trigger. Release it before you stop moving. Overlap each pass by about half the fan. Keep the gun parallel to the surface so the ends of the fan do not dump extra paint in an arc. If the pattern collapses or spits, reverse the tip and clear it with a short burst of compatible fluid, as Graco's maintenance notes describe. Do not poke a tip with wire.

Work in an order you can reach without leaning on wet coating: top trim, then doors and cabinets, then broad fields if this gun is truly the right size for them. If the battery dies mid-wall, stop at a corner or a break in the surface, swap the pack, and restart with the same overlap. Do not try to stretch a fading charge across a full wall.

Clean it before the coating sets

Flush with the cleaner the coating label names, not with whatever is on the truck. Relieve pressure before you remove the cup, tip guard, or filter. A 2007 OSHA report describes a painter who was cleaning a Graco airless with water and thinner when the sprayer discharged and injected thinner into his finger. He later lost that finger. Treat every battery gun as armed until pressure is relieved and the pack is off.

On models that use throat seal liquid, Graco says to keep the wet cup filled with TSL and not to substitute oil. If raw paint shows on the pump rod, tighten the packing nut about one-eighth turn, not until it locks. Many smaller Magnum units do not use TSL at all, so follow the manual for that model. A Graco TSL bottle belongs in the kit only when the manual calls for it.

Do not pressure-wash the sprayer. For overnight storage, Graco prefers solvent over plain water when the coating allows it, and Pump Armor over thinner for longer storage. Store with the pump rod down and the system unpressurized. Between seasons, use a seasonal airless parts check so a dead battery is not the first thing you find in spring. Disposal of solvent is a local rule. How to dispose of paint thinner covers that step if solvent is your cleaner.

Safety checks and what to confirm before you buy

Airless pressure can inject coating through skin. Never point the gun at a person, including yourself, and never use a hand to check the fan. Keep the tip guard on. If coating is injected, seek medical care and say it was a high-pressure injection injury. The OSHA case above is the reason that sentence is not optional.

Ventilation and respirators depend on the coating, not on the fact that the gun is cordless. Follow the label, the safety data sheet, and your site rules. OSHA respirator requirements for painting is the place to sort cartridge type and fit. Outdoor work does not cancel overspray or vapor.

Before you order, confirm these on the current listing:

  • Exact coating you will spray, and that both the label and the manual allow it.
  • Gallons in the job versus the stated gallons per charge.
  • Whether the battery, charger, tip, and liners are in the box.
  • Maximum tip size versus the tip the coating maker recommends.
  • Hose length, if you are leaving the gun and the bucket in different rooms.
  • Cleaning fluid and whether the model uses TSL.

For a full-size corded or gas rig instead of a battery unit, use the professional airless sprayer guide or the gas airless paint sprayer picks. Those pages cover production machines. They are the wrong next step if the job is a gallon of trim.

FAQs

Are cordless paint sprayers any good?

They are good for small, awkward, or outlet-free work when the coating is approved for that model. Graco positions handheld airless units for about 1 to 3 gallons and touch-up. They are not a replacement for a cart or gas sprayer on large open walls.

Does anyone make a battery operated paint sprayer?

Yes. Integrity Supply lists Graco cordless handhelds and a cordless 390 PC class sprayer in the spraying collection. Some run on DeWalt 20V packs, and the larger cordless unit is listed with FLEXVOLT packs. Confirm the battery system on the product page you are buying.

What is a realistic charge for a cordless paint sprayer?

Read gallons per charge on that model, then treat it as a ceiling. Current listings claim about 1 gallon per charge on the UltraMax and Ultra QuickShot handhelds, and up to about 3 gallons per battery on the 390 PC Cordless. Tip size, pressure, and stops will use the pack faster.

Can one cordless paint sprayer handle every coating?

No. Tip size and approved-material lists differ. A TrueCoat 360 Cordless Connect listing caps the tip near 0.015 inch. A 390 PC class listing goes to about 0.021 inch and much higher pressure. Match both the coating label and the sprayer manual.

How do you clean a cordless sprayer without damaging it?

Relieve pressure, remove the battery, and flush with the cleaner the label names. Reverse the tip to clear clogs. Use TSL only if that model calls for it, and do not pressure-wash the housing. Store unpressurized with the pump rod down.
